Here’s a few snippets from selections I’ve worked on in the past.
Here’s a piece of my favorite selection from Follies. This song signifies the beginning of the second part of the show, where a transition is made from the real world to inside the heads of the characters. I liked giving this song a dreamlike aspect, while still having it retain a lush old school flavor.
“Death Takes A Holiday” is full of charm, and it was my job to acctntuate it. This track has a beautiful arrangement which I wanted to be heard, but at the same time, It’s all about the vocal, as Kevin Earley really shines here.
Bruce Levingston really sets the mood on his “Portraits” album with selections from Glass, Ravel, Messian, and Satie. It was so much fun editing these oh so expressionist pieces, especially the ones by Philip Glass, with all the odd meters and polyrhythms.
Subtlety is not the biggest concern when recording rap vocals. Here’s a snippet from a Fat Joe song, where the vocal sound has to be as in your face as the lyrical content.
In This Skin
Capturing a pristine vocal performance can be a balancing act, as you might not get a second chance to capture the magic. Gotta pick and tweak the right gear to capture the sizzle and warmth of Jessica Simpson’s voice.
